Korean STEM Pay, Fact-Checked - Modal Salaries by Degree and the PhD's ₩430M Entry Fee

Salary pieces always start with the 'average' and end in a ditch. Averages get dragged up by a few top earners; the median is the person in the middle of the line; the mode is the bracket where most people actually stand. This post dissects Korean STEM pay by degree, field, and age using official statistics only. Every number is sourced, and every simulation assumption is on the table.

TL;DR

  • The modal annual salary is ₩30–42M - 20.1% of all workers sit in the ₩2.5–3.5M/month bracket; 61.6% earn under ₩3.5M/month.
  • Engineering new-hire median monthly pay: BS ₩2.708M → MS ₩4.083M → PhD ₩5.746M. MS is +51% over BS; PhD +41% over MS.
  • New-PhD annual pay runs ₩47.9–60.6M - a ₩12.7M spread depending on public lab / company / university.
  • The PhD stipend is ₩1.1M/month = 51% of the 2026 minimum wage (₩2.157M/month), or ₩5,263/hour.
  • Even under a fantasy +10%/yr PhD growth scenario, you only out-earn your same-age BS peers at age 49.

① Starting salary by degree: the official staircase

From KISTEP's 2023 HRST statistics (KEDI employment stats linked to health-insurance & tax DB), 2022 new graduates, ₩10K/month:

Field Degree Mean Median
Engineering BS 297.9 270.8
Engineering MS 431.3 408.3
Engineering PhD 640.7 574.6
Natural sci. BS 254.4 232.0
Natural sci. MS 349.6 313.3
Natural sci. PhD 495.9 445.7
Biomed BS 303.0 282.0
Biomed MS 557.7 402.1
Biomed PhD 989.4 634.4
  • BS→MS +51%, MS→PhD +41% (median). The degree staircase is real.
  • Natural science trails engineering at every rung (PhD 445.7 vs 574.6).
  • The real gossip is the biomed PhD: mean 989.4 vs median 634.4 - a ₩3.55M wall. A handful of big pharma/hospital employers inflate the mean. Textbook "the mean lies, the median is honest".
  • Starting pay inflated fast from 2020→2022: engineering BS +15.6%, MS +16.7%, PhD +13.5%.

② The new-PhD salary: where you land is everything

From the 2024 STEM workforce survey (MSIT·KISTEP), new-hire average annual pay (gross, incl. bonuses):

  • PhD: public labs ₩47.9M / companies ₩50.8M / universities ₩60.6M. (University includes faculty - but that's still ₩12.7M above public labs.)
  • All degrees: public labs ₩39.0M / companies ₩40.0M / universities ₩52.0M - the PhD premium is roughly +₩10M.
  • NST government-funded labs' PhD starting salary (excl. allowances): ₩56.31M (2024) → ₩58.01M (2025 tally).
  • Among those same labs the spread is ₩23.21M (1.49×): KRISS ₩70.37M vs Korean Medicine ₩47.16M.
  • 2026 National Assembly audit: of last year's 155 voluntary quits at gov-funded labs, 88.4% were in their 30s–40s (1,487 over the last decade); 62.7% of the 30-somethings left for academia.
Chart: grad-student stipend vs minimum wage

③ While in grad school: the ₩5,263/hour stipend

  • 2022 MSIT survey of grad-student pay: MS ₩0.63M/month, PhD ₩0.99M.
  • Since 2024 a guaranteed stipend floor exists: MS ₩0.80M / PhD ₩1.10M.
  • The 2026 minimum wage is ₩10,320/hour = ₩2.157M/month. The PhD stipend is 51% of that, ₩5,263/hour on the 209-hour basis.
  • A PhD takes 5.8 years on average; degree-holders average age 33.1 (STEPI sample).
Chart: average monthly income by age

④ By age: the 40s peak and the company-size fork

Statistics Korea's 2024 wage-job income (gross monthly averages): 20s ₩2.71M / 30s ₩3.97M / 40s ₩4.69M / 50s ₩4.45M / 60s ₩2.93M; overall mean ₩3.75M, median ₩2.88M.

  • The average 20-something (₩2.71M) earns less than the average 60-something (₩2.93M).
  • Same 30s, different worlds: big firms ₩5.62M vs SMEs ₩3.18M - a ₩2.44M gap. All-age big-vs-SME gap hit ₩3.06M, the widest on record.
  • Men ₩4.42M vs women ₩2.89M (65.3%).
Chart: worker distribution by income bracket (modal bracket)

⑤ The mode tells the truth

  • The ₩2.5–3.5M bracket is the mode at 20.1%: ₩30–42M/year is the most common salary in Korea.
  • 61.6% earn under ₩3.5M/month; only 4.3% clear ₩10M.
  • NTS percentile data (2023, full-year workers only, 13.68M people): median ₩42.72M, top-20% ₩76.24M, top-10% ₩100.57M.
  • Across all 20.54M payroll earners (2023 filing), the mean is ₩42.14M while the top 1% makes ₩330M - the arithmetic of why means lie.
Chart: annual pay at the same age, BS-track vs PhD-track

⑥ The PhD's opportunity cost: the age-49 problem

All assumptions disclosed. BS track: hired at 24 from ₩53M, +6%/yr. PhD track: 7.8 years of grad school (MS ₩9.6M/yr, PhD ₩13.2M/yr stipend), hired at 33 from ₩50.8M (survey mean for new industry PhDs). Nominal gross, no bonuses/inflation.

Same age BS track PhD (+6%) PhD (+10% fantasy)
33 8,954 5,080 5,080
40 13,464 7,638 9,899
45 18,018 10,222 15,943
49 22,747 12,905 23,342 ← crossover
50 24,112 13,679 25,677

(unit: ₩100K/yr)

  • Grad school's 7.8 years pay out ≈ ₩95.76M total; the BS track earns ≈ ₩525M in the same window. The PhD's entry fee is ≈ ₩430M.
  • At 33: BS 9th-year ₩89.54M vs new PhD ₩50.8M - careers start ₩38.74M apart.
  • Scenario A (both +6%): no crossover before retirement.
  • Scenario B (PhD +10%/yr, fantasy): salary crossover at 49, cumulative-earnings crossover at 60.
  • Cumulative earnings to 50: BS ₩338M / PhD+6% ₩168M / PhD+10% ₩243M.
  • Meanwhile the MS hire at 26 (₩60M) already out-earns the 2nd-year BS (₩59.55M) and keeps a ₩48M cumulative gap at 50. The MS is a rational trade; the PhD is paying money to do research.
⚠️ Simulation caveats: this is a toy model with disclosed assumptions. Real PhD-track growth varies wildly by field and employer (university start ₩60.6M, job-hops, equity/bonuses), and BS tracks have their own churn. The point is only how heavy the starting gap is under equal growth rates.

⑦ Bonus gossip

  • "Samsung Electronics average pay ₩158M" - that's a 13.7-year-tenure average from the business report. New-hire total pay is estimated around ₩56M. Check tenure whenever someone quotes "average salary".
  • Top-500 firms average ₩100.28M/employee (Leaders Index, 2025) vs the ₩42.72M national median. Now you know what "industry average" really means.
  • STEPI: where you got the PhD decides pay - top research universities ₩7.25M/month vs regional flagships ₩4.75M (−28.2%); Seoul big private −14.8%. The undergrad pedigree barely matters; the PhD label does.
  • Among PhD job-satisfaction items, income satisfaction is dead last at 36.4% (2021).
  • Biomed PhD mean 989 vs median 634: a case study in within-sample polarization.

Bottom line

The most common salary is ₩30–42M a year. The degree staircase (BS→MS +51%) is statistically real, and the MS is the rational trade. The PhD has to solve the age-49 problem, so it needs a reason beyond money - a problem you want to work on, an academic/lab career, unbearable curiosity. Not "don't do a PhD," but "prepare your non-monetary reason first."
